256kbps only: What
could result in exceeding the daily usage guideline?
1. What is blueyonder broadband Internet?
blueyonder broadband Internet is a high speed connection to the
internet which is always on. Blueyonder broadbnd comes via a separate cable
connection meaning that it doesn’t tip up your phone line.
Blueyonder offers a range of 4 speeds from 256k, 750k to 1.5Mb and 3Mb.
Broadband internet access allows a greater amount of information to pass
through a 'fatter' cable. This therefore speeds up the delivery of heavy data,
such as trailers or music files. Standard dial-up connections are sometimes
described as 'narrowband'.
2. What does an 'always on' service mean?
Always on means that broadband is a permanent connection to the
Internet. A broadband connection lets you access the Internet from the minute
you switch on your computer. A broadband connection is different to a narrowband
connection as you don't need to 'dial up' using a standard modem connection. You
can control outgoing and incoming access to your broadband connection if you
install personal firewall software.
. Can I watch my television and use my telephone while
using blueyonder?
Yes. Our service does not tie up your TV connection or phone line.
4. Do I need cable TV to get blueyonder?
No. You are not required to subscribe to Telewest's cable TV or
telephone services. If you do subscribe to a Telewest Telephone service we can
offer a reduced monthly fee of £25 instead of £29.99.
5. Can I receive your service if my house is not already
wired for cable?
Yes, if Telewest's digital cable network is available in your street. Please use
postcode search to check for regional availability.
6. Do I have to use blueyonder as my Internet Service
Provider (ISP)?
Yes. When you order any blueyonder Internet product, blueyonder automatically
becomes your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
7. Is it possible to prevent my children from accessing
inappropriate material on the web?
Yes. Once you have subscribed, we have a help site from which you
can access a program called Cyber Patrol. Cyber Patrol enables you to filter
certain websites to different levels of usage for all the users in your family.
An trial version of this program is available free of charge.
8. What is a NIC (Network Interface Card)?
A Network Interface Card connects the high-speed modem necessary
for broadband to your computer. It is very likely you will be able to connect
the broadband modem to your computer via a free USB port in the back of your
computer but, if not, you may need a NIC.
Check to see if you meet the minimum requirements for broadband Internet. If you
do need a NIC, they can usually be bought from most high street computer shops,
such as PC World.
9. What about security?
We make every effort possible to keep our network secure. However,
we do recommend that you use personal firewall software to secure your own
connection to the internet. You are responsible for your own security while
online.
10. How can I get blueyonder broadband Internet?
Use our postcode search to find out if blueyonder broadband is
available in your area. If you are in area, you can either sign up online, fill
in our . Our team will
contact you at a suitable time to answer any questions you may have and if you
are interested they will be happy to arrange installation of the service.
11. The 256k service has a usage guideline on
750Mb of data traffic per day. What does this mean in practical terms?
As a rough guide, 750Mb of data is approximately:
15,000 web pages
7,500 small pictures
150 music tracks
As you can see, 750Mb can go a long way! These examples are provided as a
guide only – in reality, each individual web page, picture or music track will
be of a different size. We would recommend that customers who require greater
traffic use should take one of our other broadband services (512k, 1Mb or 2Mb).
These services allow much faster downloads of large files, allow higher quality
video streaming, and do not have any usage guidelines associated with them.
How will I know if I am exceeding the
usage guideline? What will happen if I do exceed the guideline?
Customers should not worry about needing to closely monitor their daily level of
usage. In normal use, most customers will not come close to reaching the daily
usage guideline. However, in the event that a customer does regularly exceed the
guideline for usage, blueyonder may contact the customer by email to let them
know this. The purpose of this email is purely to provide information to the
customer.
What should I do if I receive a usage
notification email from blueyonder?
If you receive a usage notification email from blueyonder, you do not need to
reply to it. However, you may want to consider moving to one of our other
broadband services - 750k, 1.5Mb or 3Mb. The higher bandwidth for these services
means they offer excellent performance for tasks such as downloading or watching
high quality online video.
oes the usage guideline affect the amount
of time I can stay online each day?
No. As with all blueyonder broadband services, the 256kbps service will allow
you to stay online all day so that, for example, you’ll be able to receive email
as soon as it is sent, or quickly search for information on the web without
having to wait to dial-up to the internet.
The usage guideline relates to the amount of data which is carried over your
blueyonder connection, rather than the time you spend online, and so it is what
you do when online which is important. Surfing the web for the whole day will
typically not generate enough traffic to come close to reaching the usage
guideline, whereas constant downloading of large files for extended periods may
result in the usage guideline being reached.
256k only: What activities could result in
exceeding the daily usage guideline?
Frequent downloads of large audio or video files, for example from file-sharing
services such as Kazaa or from Newsgroups are the most common way in which large
amounts of data usage occurs.

Price per month of blueyonder broadband service
when purchased alone
blueyonder 256kbps £19.99
blueyonder 750kbps £27.99
blueyonder 1.5Mb £37.99
blueyonder 3Mb £52.99
**Quoted download times are based on all technologies working at optimum speed.
In practice, factors such as the speed a web site can support the amount of
traffic accessing it and content caching can cause quoted download times to
vary. Comparisons are made to traditional 56k dial-up services. If you are
accessing information away from home the equipment and connection you are using
will determine the speed of your connection.
